Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e das Pescas – INIAP–IPIMAR
The Instituto de Investigação das Pescas e do Mar (IPIMAR), Portuguese Institute for Fisheries and Sea Research, is the only governmental fisheries research institute in Portugal. IPIMAR carries out strategic research and technological development on management and conservation of marine living resources, ensuring scientific and technical support for policies defined by the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. It has a record of over forty years of experience in multidisciplinary studies related with all fields of marine sciences. IPIMAR is composed by three Regional Research Centers – North, Center and South. The Southern Research Center, Centro de Regional de Investigação Pesqueira do Sul (CRIPSul), is based at Olhão, southern Portugal. CRIPSul undertakes halieutic research and provides technical support to aquaculture and fisheries activities in this region. The research is directed to the management of coastal resources and to support the sustainable development of aquaculture.
Ongoing projects include national and international research projects in areas such as: population dynamics; functioning of coastal ecosystems; fish and shellfish production technology, environmental impacts. IPIMAR has been a major participant in several EU and international projects, namely PRAXIS XII, POCTI, POCI, INTERREG, STRIDE, AIR, FAIR, SEFOS, and OMEX.
