Centro de Ciências do Mar do Algarve – CCMAR/CIMAR-LA

The Centro de Ciências do Mar do Algarve (CCMAR) is a research unit located at the University of Algarve focusing on various aspects of marine research, including Conservation and Management of Aquatic Ecosystems and Aquaculture and Marine Biotechnology. CCMAR is now integrated together with CIIMAR located at the University of Porto, in the CIMAR associated laboratory, a centre of excellence of the Portuguese Ministry of Science and Higher Education. One of the central aims of CCMAR/CIMAR is to contribute to the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry, through basic and applied research directed to the optimisation of cultivation techniques, and improvement of the quality of fish products.

Ongoing projects involve studies on nutrition and physiology of fish, but also the development and optimisation of production systems and feeding regimes for fish, larval and fry quality, and fish products quality. One of the main areas of work in recent years is the optimization of the culture potential of the sole, Solea senegalensis, both in intensive and semi-intensive systems. These activities have been developed in the framework of several research projects over the last ten years, at both national and international level (e.g., PRAXIS XII, POCTI, POCI, INTERREG, STRIDE, AIR, FAIR, CRAFT and QLM programs).
