The Experimental Ecology and Aquaculture Laboratory (LESA) is a research unit belonging to the Department of Biology of the University of Rome ‘Tor Vergata’, specialized in morpho-physiological, genetical, ecological and aquacultural studies in support of environmentally-friendly aquatic farming and coastal lagoon management. The main research activities in optimisation of aquaculture models integrated in the environmental context carried out by LESA are focused on phytodepuration of aquaculture wastewater, semi-intensive rearing of larvae and juveniles, optimisation of low-impact aquatic production systems, ‘valli’ and coastal lagoons integrated management. The research core is an overall approach consistent with both principles of ecocompatibility, biodiversity conservation and models of sustainable development. One of the main areas of work in the last twenty years is the improved quality and optimal welfare conditions for rearing of finfish larvae and juveniles, monitored through physiological and morphological indicators.

Ongoing projects are: - an Interreg III A Italia – Albania project: “QUALIFISH – Quality and certification systems: an integrated approach for the valorisation of fish products.”; - Italian Ministry of Agricultural and Alimentary Politics project: “Optimization of the production chain for the consumer welfare: widening and transfer of knowledge on processes and products.”; - Italian Ministry of Agricultural and Alimentary Politics research: “Validation of morpho-physiological indicators for sea bream and sea bass production and reference model for the setting up of an expert system chain.”; - Italian Ministry of Instruction, University and Research project: “An Integrated Approach to the Conservation and Management of the European Eel in the Mediterranean Region”.
