Istituto Centrale per la Ricerca Scientifica e Tecnologica applicata al Mare – ICRAM
The Central Institute for Marine Research (ICRAM) is a national research body supervised by the Ministry of the Environment, based in Rome. The Institute houses four Departments and a total of 98 permanent staff and 240 collaborators embracing various skills in the following fields: I) Monitoring of Environmental Quality; II) Prevention and Mitigation of Impacts on marine ecosystems; III) Habitat & Biodiversity Conservation; IV) Sustainable Use of Marine Resources (including Aquaculture and Fishery units). Technical facilities and a total of 22 laboratories are located in Rome, and in two peripheric stations in Palermo (Sicily) and Chioggia (Veneto); an oceanographic vessel (ASTREA) is also available for activities on field. In addition to research, ICRAM carries out counselling activity to central and local authorities by providing scientific and technical support for the management of marine and coastal environments.
Ongoing projects include three UE programs, respectively on physiology and welfare (WEALTH) and genetics (GENIMPACT) of cultured marine species and environmental impact of mariculture (ECASA). The Aquaculture unit is also involved in 12 ongoing national programs mainly concerned with the following research topics: reproduction, larval rearing and restocking of endangered and commercial marine species (Epinephelus marginatus and Pagrus pagrus), health and welfare of farmed fish, development of environmentally sound aquaculture practices, alien species in aquaculture and sustainable use of genetic resources in aquaculture.
