The Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR) as a multi site organisation is the main research and advisory body for marine environment, fisheries and aquaculture in Greece. The Institute of Aquaculture, one of the five Institutes of HCMR on two locations (Crete and Athens) curries out basic and applied research into the rearing process of marine animals, improvement of quality and welfare. It has state of the art facilities on Crete for both experimental and pilot scale studies, including hatcheries (mesocosm and intensive), broodstock of several fish species, pre-growing and on-growing land facilities and also a net-pen cage farm. Specialized laboratories (haematology, water quality, fish behaviour) support any experimental studies. The team for the present project consists of scientists with a high competence in the fields of fish behaviour, fish physiology, modelling, larval rearing, on-growing methods and microbiology.
Ongoing projects include EU-funded projects: “On farm assessment of stress level in fish”, 6th Framework Program, STREP; and “Improving sustainability of European fish aquaculture by control of malformations”, 6th Framework Program, Collective Research. Also National Projects: “Development of methodologies for reproduction, management, and larval rearing of wreck fish, Polyprion americanus”; “In-vitro growth of bacteriophages targeted against critical pathogens in aquaculture”; “Novel methodology for the rearing of seabass based on sex differentiation and management of environmental parameters” and “Method for production of biodiesel from microalgae”.
