Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer – IFREMER

The French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (IFREMER) is a public body of industrial and commercial nature, it is the only French organisation with an entirely maritime purpose. It operates under the joint auspices of the Ministries of Research, Agriculture and Fisheries, Amenities and Transport, and Ecology and Sustainable development. Two programmes are developed in Ifremer on Aquaculture, one on the quality of the production (QUALIPRO) and the other on the sustainability of the production systems, with a particular attention to the environmental risk management and to an ecosystemic approach. Ifremer-Nantes (see upper slide) is involved in the project with two scientific departments “Genetic Improvement, Animal Health and Environment” (AGSAE-Bouin, AGSAE-La Rochelle) and “Marine food Sciences and Techniques” (STAM-Nantes).

Ongoing projects involved many EU projects on aquaculture. Some of them have or had more or less close links with SEACASE, looking on the sustainable aquaculture indicators (ECASA), the land-based marine aquaculture integrated systems (GENESIS), the marine product quality (EUROSALMON), the fish behavioural ecology (SEAFOODplus, FASTFISH BENEFISH). Experimental facilities used for the project are located in Ifremer-La Rochelle (CRELA) and in Ré island (FMB fishfarm).
