Centre Régional d'Expérimentation et d'Application Aquacole – CREAA
The Centre for the Experimentation and Development of Marine Aquaculture of Poitou-Charentes (CREAA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1990 by the Poitou-Charentes Région, IFREMER, and the oyster culturist’s Syndicate (SRC- Poitou-Charentes). CREAA is a link between the research centres and the 1200 local aquaculture SME’s. CREAA’s mission is to develop and consolidate the regional aquaculture activity by giving assistance to traditional activity (Extensive shellfish, and fish culture activity) or by developing new activities on the seashore, the open sea or in the salt marshes. CREAA participated to the European GENESIS program and host the temperate IFREMER/CREAA integrated aquaculture pilot.
Ongoing projects involve working to the definition and promotion of semi-intensive shrimp culture, Salicornia cultivation, long lines shellfish culture, and scallop cultivation. Concerning Eel, CREAA is actually in charge of the scientific and technical aspect of a big rehabilitation program of ancient ponds originally created for extensive Eel culture in the Seudre estuary.
