Eel extensive culture has been a lucrative activity on the western south coast of Europe in France, where ancient salt marshes and wetlands were converted to this industry. This economical activity was carrying out the protection and restoration of those coastal areas.
As a consequence of eel stock depletion and labour cost increase, this activity is not profitable any more, and most of those protected wetlands go to abandon and risk disappearing as farming decline. As they play an important part in the sustainability of eel and several other fisheries and as these territories have an enormous environmental and patrimonial value, restoration policies concerning those wetlands are developed.
They cannot be anymore founded on traditional activities so new management protocols, and new productions systems, new bio and socio-economic evaluation must be performed to assist fisheries organization and government agencies in developing adequate policies.
